Elk Altar Society

The Elk Altar Society is the current-day form of the century-long mutual support between the community of Elk and the Blessed Sacrament Church, built in 1896.  It is the successor organization to the Native Sons of Little Ireland.

The Elk Altar Society became a public benefit corporation organized exclusively for public and charitable purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in 2008.  The Board of Directors is comprised of ten individuals from the church and from the community, sharing one common interest – the mutual support of the town and church.

The Altar Society sponsors two fundraising events:  a St. Patrick’s Party and a Colossal Yard Sale.  It also administers the Sharon Mitchell Memorial Scholarship program for local students.

Proceeds from the Altar Society’s events are used to feed the poor and transients and maintain the church and rectory.  The Society contributes unsold books from the Colossal Yard Sale to the Point Arena library and other goods to St. Elizabeth Seton in Philo for later sale.

Greenwood Community Church Foundation

The Greenwood Community Church Foundation was established in 1993 to purchase the former Greenwood Methodist Church and parsonage on behalf of the community of Elk.  Built by the residents and donated to the town in 1892, the church was owned by the Methodist Church for nearly 100 years before it was put up for sale due to low attendance and maintenance problems.

The Greenwood Community Church Foundation is a public benefit corporation organized exclusively for public and charitable purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Its purpose is to keep the historic church as a house of worship and fellowship open to all faiths.  A 7-member volunteer Board of Directors meets at 6:00 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the church.

To support renovation projects and ongoing maintenance of the Greenwood Community Church and parsonage, the Church Foundation solicits donations and sponsors an annual Holiday Craft Fair and Sees Candy sale.  Rental fees from the use of the church and proceeds from a color lithograph print of a painting by Bruce Wolfe, Last Light at Greenwood Cove, provide the remainder of the operating funds.  Rent paid by tenants of the parsonage covers the mortgage.  Offerings are welcome.
