Navarro-by-the-Sea Center

Navarro-by-the-Sea Center (NSCR) is a small all-volunteer nonprofit working in collaboration with California State Parks to save the two remaining historic structures of the original town of Navarro at the mouth of the Navarro River, and reopen them for public education, interpretation, and research. While the original town of Navarro has long since been reclaimed by floods, fires and earthquakes, the historic Captain Fletcher's Inn (ca 1865) and the Mill Superintendent's House (ca 1864) somehow survived.

NSCR’s current focus is on completing rehabilitation of the historic Inn and continuing efforts for its adaptive reuse as an interpretive center for the public.  Annual events currently include a spring cleanup and work party (typically in April), and the Navarro-by-the-Sea Day fundraiser (typically in June), with locally donated food and drink, live music, commemorative t-shirts and note cards, and silent auction items. As work is nearing completion on the historic Inn, the hope is to begin focusing on the historic Mill House before that structure is lost.

NSCR is a public benefit corporation organized exclusively for public and charitable purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  A five-member volunteer Board of Directors meets monthly, typically on the 3rd Friday of the month either in Mendocino or at the Inn.  Anyone interested in helping with the efforts to save the historic Inn and Mill House, and share their history with the public is encouraged to contact Board President Jim Martin by phone at 707-877-3477 or email at
