Navarro-by-the-Sea Center

The Navarro-by-the-Sea Center (NSCR) for Riparian and Estuarine Research was founded to promote education and interpretive activities at Navarro River Redwoods State Park; support scientific and historic research of the original town of Navarro, the Navarro estuary system, and the larger Navarro watershed; and present these subjects to the public.  Through research and education, NSCR hopes to promote a sustainable balance between the natural and human communities.

NSCR’s goals are to:  (1) restore the historic Captain Fletcher's Inn at Navarro-by-the-Sea with the intention of occupying a portion of the building, with the ground floor serving as a visitor education and interpretive center; (2) provide education and interpretive services for both scientific communities and the general public, including school children; and (3) foster scientific research and restoration of riparian and estuarine ecosystems of the North Coast of California, focusing on the Navarro River system.

NSCR’s current focus is the rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of the historic Captain Fletcher’s Inn (ca. 1865) and the other remaining historic structures near the Navarro Beach.  In partnership with the Mendocino District of California State Parks, NSCR applied for, received and is administering a Planning Grant from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment that is funding this effort.

The NSCR is a public benefit corporation organized exclusively for public and charitable purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  A five-member volunteer Board of Directors meets monthly on the 3rd Friday of the month in Mendocino.  Anyone interested in saving the Inn and its history is encouraged to join and/or participate in its subcommittee, the Charles Fletcher Society.  The annual membership fee is $25.

More information about the Center’s activities, plans, progress and events can be found at http://www.navarro-by-the-sea-center.org.
