Greenwood School currently serves 10 children, kindergarten through grade 3, in one of the few remaining one-room schoolhouses in California. The school is situated on an ocean bluff in the village of Elk. The mission of the school is to maintain physical ties to the community and families of young students, educating them in their home community.
Greenwood School is part of the Mendocino Unified School District. The school and district enjoy the support of the community through MUSE (Mendocino Unified School Enrichment – an educational foundation), athletic and music booster clubs, and a taxpayer-approved parcel tax, maintenance assessment fee and school facilities bond.
The curriculum is tailored to each child’s need and developmental readiness. The school’s strong educational program is supplemented by a school garden, regular interactions with Albion School, a fall Harvest Feast, and a spring play. An active group of parents are welcomed as partners in their children’s education.
